Favorites and Least Favorites

Week of February 3, 2013—Thinking About Characters
February 5—Favorites and Least Favorites

No doubt you’ve been to conferences and sessions where you’ve sketched out detailed lists of the characteristics, likes, dislikes, and more about your characters. I think there’s value in that process, but I think you can limit your list to three favorites and three least favorites and find just as much (or more value) in the process.

Now the favorites and least favorites you choose must be important to your character and his/her development. The favorites and least favorites might very well play into your plot line, or just inform the sensibilities of your character. These three favorites and three least favorites should be so important that your character can not be described without them and you can’t write about the character without knowing them. Try it.
