You are what you write!

Drafts are to writers what sketches are to artists. It’s our way of getting something down on paper, to preserve a thought, to physically hold a spot in the world until we can refine the idea into a piece of art.

If you find yourself writing character names, bits of dialogue, or a new story idea on a napkin, gum wrapper, or post-it, you might be a writer!

One of my fourth grade students summarized why it’s important to stay in your seat and write ("butt-in-seat" an adult might say). Enjoy!

Mr. Sanders made up a rule in which you cannot get out of your seat during writing. If you have to go to the bathroom during writing, you’ll have to wait. Mr. Sanders says once you get out of your seat your brain is trying to make an excuse for not writing. People who don’t like to write mostly do that. When you’re in your seat you focus a lot because when you’re in your seat all there is you and the paper.
