Week of January 1, 2012: An Interview with Maria Modugno
Quote of the Week:
There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.
—C. S. Lewis
Maria Modugno. If you don’t know her, you should. Ask any agent, children’s industry professional, or veteran picture book writer to list the top five picture book editors, and Maria Modugno’s name will undoubtedly land in the list. (I know because I’ve asked.)
Maria is the Vice President and Editorial Director for HarperCollins Children’s Books. She has worked at several major publishing houses over the years and with writers who are among the picture book greats. Maria is also known as the “queen of picture books series” with the Silverlicious, Fancy Nancy, and Pete the Cat series (as well as others) under her belt.
We’ll spend this week with Maria Modugno. This is an interview you won’t want to miss.
On Friday, the second annual Picture This! Best Picture Books of the Year list will be unveiled. Thanks to all my friends and readers who submitted their favs for the list!

A correction from Maria: The actual editor of the PETE and NANCY series is Margaret Anastas from HarperCollins. So the talent runs deep and wide at that publishing house! Thanks, Maria, and sorry, Margaret!
