The Little Golden Books on My Shelf

Week of November 27: Picture Books Are Golden
Friday, December 2: The Little Golden Books On My Shelf

Some of the first books I ever held and heard read were Little Golden Books. The first place I ever remember seeing books for sale was at the Consumers Grocery Store on Glenstone Avenue back in Springfield, Missouri. They were Golden Books, of course.  Most of the Golden Books I remember weren’t purchased for me—they were passed down from my older brother and sister (which explains why my name is not written in any of the books). My sister and I still argue about whose books they are, but they sit on my bookshelf and possession is nine-tenths of the law!

Some of Golden Books we purchased at garage sales. Don’t laugh, Little Golden Books cost as much as 89 cents by the early 70s! The fact remains, Little Golden Books have always been easy to obtain and affordable (even at garage sales).

Some of my favorites were well-known fairy tales, stories based on TV shows or movies (especially Disney movies), and books about careers and community helpers.

Of course, The Pokey Little Puppy is in the collection. That book has such a great ending—every kid can relate!

I love Little Golden Books! I have a huge collection of them, most were picked up at garage sales and thrift stores.

I am always enraptured by the Golden Books illustrated by Eloise Wilkins. I have the bound treasury IN ADDITION to my 1970's originals (bought at the Piggly Wiggly on South Main St in Orange, Massachusetts!)

I love LGBs also and have really added to my collection by finding them at the Salvation Army for a dime each. Looks like you have some good ones!
